Simple Composting

When autumn rolls around and the leaves come down, you have your best chance for quick and simple compost. Rake up your leaves as usual but don't fill the bags all of the way this time. Leave about a third of the bag empty. Once you've bagged up your leaves, poke holes all over the bag to let air circulate. This is always critical for keeping the decomposition process from stinking while the compost is cooking. Wet the leaves thoroughly. Add a shovel full of dirt and shake up the bag. Watch the progress of your compost loosely for a couple of weeks and water the leaves when they dry out. Shake the bags up again every other weak and also when you add water. This is similar to turning a compost heap. In about three months, you should have some lovely leaf mold compost.

If you want to have compost year round and you have the space, take your neighbor's leaves as well. They won't miss them since they are bagging them up to throw out anyway. If you are feeling especially nice, rake them up for them. Any way you approach it, I'm sure they'll be glad to be rid of them and you get some good compost material.
